Music

SRCS offers a variety of music instruction and performance opportunities for students.  These include:

Instrumental Instruction

SRCS Band

The SRCS music curriculum, entitled Music for Christian Schools, is taught once (grades K-2) or twice (grades 3 - 4) a week in the Music room. The syllabus is full of educational material, encompassing both sacred and secular music. Grades 1 - 4 use textbooks, worksheets and rhythm instruments. A pre-band instrument (such as a recorder) is introduced in 3rd grade. Supplemental materials are also used for seasonal topics and movement. Pre-K classes enjoy a fun circle time -  learning songs about God and basic educational topics, accompanied by CDs or ukulele.

Band classes begin in 5th grade. Students meet for a sectional class of like instruments for a half hour a week. Additional classes are given to the whole group where they cover rudiments of rhythm and notation, as well as play altogether in a band setting. All classes are held during the school day.

In Middle School, students in 6th grade can choose Cadet band as an academic elective; 7th and 8th grade students become members of the Concert Band after the Cadet level is attained. Classes meet 2 - 3 times a week.

Jazz Ensemble meets after school and is available to Middle School students.

The bands perform at chapels, concerts, and festivals.

Vocal Instruction

SRCS offers a Chorus elective in 5th grade. Students learn about the Vocal Mechanism and basic vocal production and blending.  They study a variety of musical styles. They perform in chapels, at the Fall and Spring Concerts and other school events. This class meets twice a week for 30 minutes.

Middle School Chorus is an academic elective offered during eighth period twice a week.  Students in Chorus learn more about vocal production focusing on pitch and rhythm accuracy, dynamics, articulation, sight-reading, projection, and good breath control.  We use the curriculum Essential Repertoire for the Young Choir by Hal Leonard.  We also learn Praise and Worship songs and Contemporary Christian Pop.  Students perform in chapels, at the Fall and Spring Concerts and other school events.  Solo and Ensemble songs are also encouraged.

Elementary Students in grades 2-4 can choose to participate in an after-school Chapel Choir.  Chapel Choir meets every Monday from 3:15-4:00.  Students will have opportunities to perform at various Elementary chapels and school events.
