Performing Arts

SRCS offers a variety of music instruction and performance opportunities for students. These include:

Music Classes

The SRCS music curriculum, entitled Spotlight on Music, is taught once (grades K-1) or twice (grades 2 - 4) a week in the Music room. The curriculum includes a wide variety of multicultural music supplemented with technology.  A pre-band instrument (such as a recorder) is introduced in 3rd grade. Preschool classes enjoy a fun circle time learning songs about God and learning basic musical concepts with the intractive whiteboard technology.

Instrumental Music

Band classes begin in 5th grade. Students enrolled in 5th Grade Band meet for sectionals once a week, learning the fundamentals of their given instrument.  Band rehearsals are held twice a week, where students develop the skills to play together as a large group and prepare for concerts.  The 5th Grade Band performs at the Music Department Spring Concert.  It is a celebration of what they have learned and an opportunity for them to share the joy of music.

Middle School students can participate in the Concert Band and Jazz Band.  These groups build on the fundamentals learned in 5th Grade Band, developing and refining each student's gifts and talents.  These bands perform several times a year in a variety of settings.

Vocal Music

Elementary students in grades two through four can choose to participate in the Chapel Choir.  The Chapel Choir rehearses once a week during the students' recess.  Students perform at various elementary chapels, concerts, and school events.

Chorus is offered to students in 5th grade and middle school.  This group meets twice a week for rehearsals. Chorus focuses on developing and refining each student's gift and talents.  Students learn about vocal production, pitch, rhythm, dynamics, sight-reading, and more.   The Chorus performs several times a year in a variety of settings.

The Vocal Ensemble is a group of middle school students who love to sing in a small group.   This group meets once a week, learning and performing a wide variety of music and music styles.  Members partner with the Praise Band in leading our Middle School Chapel in worship.

Praise Band

Middle school students can join the Middle School Praise Band, a small group of musicians that focus on leading praise and worship for our middle school students.   This group leads many of our middle school chapels and all-school special events.

Christmas Musical

The Christmas Musical is performed in December as a way to kick-off  the season and celebrate Christmas.   This production features the Grand Chorus (all 2nd through 4th grade students), and select 3rd through 8th grade students in drama, small ensembles, and vocal solos.

Talent Expo 2014

SRCS had their annual Talent Expo on Wednesday, June 4th, 2014.  Students of all ages performed.  The audience enjoyed  many talented students who sang, danced, played piano, played guitar, and performed gymnastics.  In addition, Mrs. Sharon Demko was treated to a special rendition of "So Long, Farewell" performed by the SRCS staff.  Click on any of the photo gallery thumbnails to see a full-size image.

Visual Arts

SRCS students begin coming to the art room in preschool and continue through middle school.  The beauty of God's creation as seen through God's world is emphasized.  Development of skills using a wide variety of art mediums are explored, which include but are not limited to: paints, pencils, pastels, chalks, and 3-dimensional materials.  All projects and procedures for all age groups are designed to stimulate individual creativity in each child in a fun and exciting learning environment.  Student artwork is exhibited in the media center throughout the school year and at special school events.
